The Winter Solstice and Contemporary Dance Project

Winter Solstice

  • The Story

It is the day of the Winter Solstice—the darkest day of the year. Children are playing in the snow when a flock of bluebirds appears. Drawn by their call, the children follow the birds deeper into the woods.

As the wind picks up and snow begins to fall, they realize they’ve wandered far from home.

When the storm clears, three brown bears pass quietly by, and the children watch from a distance. Darkness settles in, and the moon and stars begin to shine—they will help guide the children home.

Back at home, everyone is searching. A path of light is left glowing in the snow, in the hope the children will find their way back.

  • Created by Students

True to First City’s values, this project offers dancers a unique opportunity to explore the creative process and collaborate as artists in bringing this enchanting tale to life. Guided by our teaching faculty, dancers will develop important skills in storytelling, improvisation, and ensemble work—building both confidence and artistry as they contribute to the creation of an original piece. The work will be set to an original music composition by Rod Johnson, adding another rich layer of artistry to this collaborative experience.

  • Who can participate?

We want to ensure all dancers have the opportunity to participate. There is no audition required, and the project is open to any dancer aged 5 and up who is enrolled in our ballet program.

To register, simply head to the Parent Portal!

Dancers collaborate on Saturday afternoons from September through December to bring this production to life.

Contemporary Dance Project

The Contemporary Dance Project is open to dancers aged 13 and up who are enrolled in our contemporary dance program. No audition is required. This is a unique artistic and performance opportunity where dancers collaborate with musicians to create an original work.
