Embracing Silliness in Dance

Writer: Marcia DysartMarcia Dysart

Stepping out of one's comfort zone and embracing silliness can be a powerful method for boosting a dancer's confidence on stage. By shedding inhibitions and allowing oneself to be playful, dancers can develop a deeper sense of self-assurance and authenticity in their performances. Embracing silliness fosters a relaxed and uninhibited mindset, freeing dancers from the fear of judgment and enabling them to fully immerse themselves in the moment. Taking risks and being willing to appear silly cultivates resilience and adaptability, essential qualities for thriving in the unpredictable environment of live performance. Ultimately, by embracing silliness and coming out of their shells, dancers not only enhance their confidence but also infuse their performances with a vibrant energy and charm that captivates audiences. As teachers, we use character work to encourage silliness in our dancers. By asking them to imagine they're portraying someone else, they feel liberated to step outside their usual selves. It gives them permission to explore different expressions and movements, breaking free from any self-imposed limitations. This approach not only fosters creativity but also builds confidence by showing dancers they can inhabit different personas and fully embrace the performance without fear of judgment.
